Case Study: From Bathroom Disaster to a Durable, Designer Retreat

Tiffanie had been living in her newly constructed Church Hill, Richmond home for five years when things started to unravel—literally. What began as a few loose tiles turned into a full-blown bathroom failure. The wall tiles were crooked and popped out in different directions, grout lines were inconsistent and cracking, and her mosaic shower floor had gone soft underfoot. Walking on it felt like stepping on a sponge. The grout had completely broken down in places, exposing the cavities underneath. To make things worse, the glass shower partitions had started sagging off their hinges and clanged together with every movement.

“I expected some wear over time,” Tiffanie told us, “but I didn’t expect the whole bathroom to start falling apart.”

When she reached out, she was frustrated and unsure if it could even be fixed without ripping everything out. During our initial walkthrough, it was clear the original tile work had been rushed and poorly executed—but the full extent of the damage didn’t reveal itself until we started removing tile from the walls and floor.

We gave her a rough estimate upfront, making sure she understood there might be some surprises as we dug in. While we expected the material costs might shift, we were clear that the labor would need to be extensive to correct all the issues. And that’s exactly what unfolded.

Behind the mosaic floor, we discovered a styrofoam underlayment meant for large-format tile, not small mosaic. The uneven weight distribution had caused the floor to sag and flex, breaking down the grout and loosening the tiles. Worse still, the waterproofing had been brushed on rather than properly layered, and the shower pan was built without a solid, leveled concrete base.

In the walls, regular sheetrock had been used instead of cement board—completely unfit for a wet zone like a shower. And the sagging glass? The framing behind the walls had never been reinforced to support the weight of the partitions, causing them to slowly pull the wall inward along with the tile, stressing the structure and distorting the alignment over time.

We rebuilt everything from the studs out: proper waterproofing, cement board installation, a hand-poured and leveled concrete shower pan, and reinforced framing for the heavy glass doors. Each tile was hand-set and leveled for perfect alignment, and we sealed it all with long-lasting grout and caulk built for wet environments.

Now, Tiffanie’s bathroom is what it always should have been—solid, sleek, and built to last.

“A Stress-Free Remodel That Changed Everything”

The team rebuilt my bathroom from the ground up with real craftsmanship and attention to detail. Everything is solid, clean, and built to last. From a Vibrant Childhood Past to a Calm, Guest-Ready Escape

Rachel and Glen Ellyn reached out with a bittersweet project—her daughter had just left for college, and the room she’d grown up in was now empty. What remained was a collage of hand-drawn art, posters layered over old paint, and a corner packed with gaming gear and musical instruments.

“It’s a room full of memories,” Rachel said, “but now it’s time for something new.”

She wanted to turn it into a serene guest space—something warm and welcoming for visitors, with a small library corner and a place to relax. But like many homeowners, she hesitated at first. She wasn’t sure where to begin or how to make it feel cohesive. She also didn’t want her home turned upside down during the process.

We talked through the vision together, focusing on how the room could evolve while still honoring its past. I recommended a soft, neutral wall color to lighten the space and freshen the mood, paired with crisp trim and subtle finishes to give it a clean, polished feel.

Over a few days, we carefully transformed the room—smoothing the walls, patching old pinholes, sealing in years of wear, and bringing in new life with clean lines and quality finishes. The posters came down. The game chair was replaced with a cozy reading nook and a small shelf filled with favorite books. Soft lighting, layered bedding, and a chill corner gave the room its final touch.

Now, the room serves a new purpose—ready for countless friends and family to stay comfortably and welcoming her daughter every time she visits. It holds onto its roots, but with a fresh feel that reflects the next chapter of their lives.

When we finished, Rachel stood in the doorway and smiled.

“It doesn’t feel like we erased her,” she said. “It just feels like we made space for what’s next.”

“It’s beautiful,” she added. “You understood exactly what I was trying to do. Now, when guests come to stay, I can welcome them into a room that feels intentional and calm.”

“A Peaceful Transformation That Honors the Past and Welcomes the Future”
“You completely understood what I was hoping for, even when I didn’t know how to put it into words. The room still holds the memories of my daughter growing up, but now it also feels peaceful, fresh, and ready for guests. I love how thoughtful and smooth the whole process was—no stress, no mess, just a beautifully finished space. Every detail feels intentional. I couldn’t be happier with the result.”

Restoring More Than Just the Wood

Carla and James had a spacious, elevated deck with tons of potential—a beautiful covered area with a net for shade and comfort, along with a smaller open-air section that was perfect for morning coffee or evening chats. But time had taken its toll. The paint was worn, the surface weathered, and many of the boards had begun to show signs of rot and aging. It was clear the deck needed more than a touch-up—it needed real attention.

When I came by for a consultation, we walked through the space together. I noted the problem areas and explained exactly how I’d approach the restoration, from replacing damaged boards to prepping every surface for a clean, lasting finish. First came a thorough power wash to strip away years of buildup. Then sanding, board replacement, and detailed edge prep before painting.

We chose a two-tone color scheme: a warm brown for the deck floor and railings, paired with crisp white trim to brighten the structure and complement their home. The contrast gave the deck a fresh, modern look while still feeling inviting.

Once everything was finished, the transformation was striking. The covered deck felt serene and sheltered, while the open section became a cheerful extension of their living space. Carla mentioned how much lighter the whole house felt with the new palette. James smiled, leaned back in his chair, and said, “Now this is a deck I actually want to spend time on.”

“Bringing Our Deck Back to Life”

“”We couldn’t be happier with how our deck turned out. Oleg was clear, professional, and handled every part of the job with care—from replacing old boards to helping us choose the perfect color combination. Our covered deck feels calm and welcoming now, and the open section is perfect for relaxing outdoors. The quality of the finish is outstanding—smooth, clean, and built to last. It completely changed how we use the space. Highly recommend!””
